Team Sherri Martel vs Team Fabulous Moolah- Survivor Series 1987
Held on Thanksgiving of that year, at the Richfield coliseum in Ohio, this Survivor Series women’s match comes right after a very strong men’s survivor series match between team Macho Man vs Team Honky Tonk Man.
The tag team champs, The Glamour Girls, Judy Martin and Leilani Kai are introduced first as their manager, The mouth from the south Jimmy Hart stands tall knowing that his clients are walking into this match with gold around their waist. Dawn Marie, Donna Cristanello, and Sherri Martel make up one team, I would say the heel team. Velvet McIntyre, Rockin Robin, Jumping Bomb Angels and Fabulous Moolah make up the super over baby face team. The women’s champion, and captain of her team, Sherri Martel starts off the match and takes it to Velvet McIntyre. Fabulous Moolah couldn’t wait to get her hands on Sherri and the rest of her team. And that’s exactly what she got when she received the tag. Velvet McIntyre gets in and starts off the first round of eliminations. Great team work was showcased when Team Sherri took turns tagging in to tire out their opponent and isolating them to one side of the ring.
Team Moolah gets a leg up when the jumping bomb angels worked their high flying magic and got the crowd out of their seats. Some brutal looking fists were thrown when Moolah was brought back in to battle both Glamour Girls. One thing that is clear in the match is the pace between the pace of the American wrestlers vs the Japanese. They you could see the difference in generations between the women and how the Jumping Bomb Angels were bringing in a style that was going to be a stable in the ‘90s.
Sherri takes it to Velvet McIntryre followed by a tough as nails Velvet really taking it Judy Martin to the limit shortly thereafter. Velvet success in eliminating Sensational Sherri and the chemistry between these two is phenomenal.
Now it’s up to the Jumping Bomb Angels to take this victory for Team Moolah. Lelani Kai eliminates Velvet McIntyre shortly after. Both the Glamour Girls and the Jumping Bomb angels want this win.
Jimmy hart is supporting his team by giving them words of affirmation through his famous mega phone. It’s not enough beacause Lelani Kai is eliminated and leaves her partner Judy Martin to fend for herself. The jumping bomb angels use their superior tag skills and aerial moves to home the win. Even with Jimmy Hart’s interference, The jumping bomb angels get the win.
This 22 minute match was a highlight of the night.
The standouts in this survivor series match was certainly the tag teams. Both The Glamour Girls and the Jumping Bomb angels showcased a high level of precision and synergy while performing in this match.
Sherri Martel and Moolah did a great job of letting their animosity for each other show as they continued their feud that created a bitterness for Moolah after she lost the title to the sensational one prior to this PPV.
Velvet McIntyre was such a dynamic single’s wrestler. She really held her own. Her stamina and technical skills were very impressive. All in all, I believe that this 1987 women’s survivor series match was one that should be viewed as one of the best in this beloved annual PPV.
