This Saturday, at ROH Final Battle is not the first time that Mercedes Martinez and Athena have met in the ring.
Shimmer Original vs Rising Newbie
In 2014, Mercedes Martinez and Athena went head to head, in their old Shimmer Wrestling stomping grounds.
These two ladies duked it out and gave us a hard hitting series of matches for Shimmer 43,44 and 45.
The first match ends in a double count out when both women stopped the other from reentering the ring.
The fans were demanding a rematch the same night, and Athena tried to lure Mercedes back into the ring, but being the more experienced and clever wrestler, Mercedes decided to leave the arena and live to fight another day.
Round Two
At Shimmer 44, Mercedes came ready to pick apart Athena’s injured leg. Even going to backstage, grabbing a chair and whacking Athena with her steel weapon of choice.
Mercedes of course loses the match, but seems to not care. She just wants to take Athena apart.
The assault didn’t stop there. More shots to Athena’s back and a fisherman buster takes Athena completely out.
Athena needs the assistance of several referees to get to the locker room.
Final Round
By Shimmer 45, this feud is so heated that Athena can’t even make it to the ring without Mercedes coming back to the entrance ramp to pounce on her.
Mercedes takes control of this match early on. You can see that the Shimmer original, Mercedes Martinez wanted to drive the point home that she is too high up on the roster to have to wrestle a newbie like Athena.
The match goes to the outside, and some brutal shoves to the barricade really drives home how far these women will destroy each other to win.
A very vicious DDT on the hardwood floor to Mercedes Martinez gets the going wild.
THAT WAS AWESOME chants are heard throughout the match.
This match goes back and forth, with both women getting the best of each other, but it would Athena that gets the victory after pulling off her signature o-face.
A loud crowd helps to cement that with this win, Athena is a star in Shimmer.
Now we are at the tail end of 2022 and these women will meet again.
What we will get as both women have journeyed to other promotions after their Shimmer feud, and added more to their arsenal?
We can’t be too sure.
One thing is for sure, we know that these two ladies will certainly put on a hell of a match.
